I agree with Thomas on all accounts. In general I think it's cool that the italic is a bit quirky, but too much of the quirkiness just looks flimsy now. It's too feeble to match the roman.1 -

I don't see the problem. Whether a particular style is better than another is highly subjective, so I assume they look mostly at execution and originality.1
